Advanced Drivers

Advanced or as some call it Defensive driving skills, are not as difficult to obtain as you might have been led to believe. Observation and concentration are some of the key factors that are required to avoid accidents.

In advanced driving organisations like the IAM, conduct an Advanced Driving Test, which all members have to pass. The test is based on the 'Roadcraft' system of car control as taught in Home Office Approved Police Driving Schools. All the examiners have undergone specialised Police Training and hold Advanced Driving Certificates. Passing the IAM or RoSPA Tests can give you a discount with some insurance companies

Through the Advanced Driving Test, these organisations aim to raise driving standards by increasing the competence of drivers. It was determined in a Transport and Road Safety Laboratory Report published in December 1972 that Advanced Motorists have between 50% to 70% lower accident rate. It should be emphasised that higher driving standards can reduce the likelihood of an accident, and this is the main and most significant benefit of an Advanced Driving Organisation.

There are various advantages to becoming an Advanced Driver:

Police drivers (who have had the benefit of far more training than the average driver) develop a very high level of situational awareness, and position their vehicles accordingly, which is one of the key skills in avoiding accidents and improving safety margins.
